variation on a theme

posted Monday, 28 May 2007
People often seem a little confused about how I do what I do with a background like my background. It all seems pretty logical in small steps when it's explained, but I still think there are many who can't get their head around a medieval historian working in computers. It was a slippery slope, I'll admit, but it's only a variation on a theme. Last week, I heard four very interesting variations on a theme. I heard four people tell [more or less of] their lifestories. Four people with the same underlying 'job'. But with very different jobs. Though not so different really, on the inside. They were all variations on a theme. A theme I'm warming to. Interestingly (like with other variations, Elgar, Rachmaninov etc) I didn't find a favourite variation. In fact they all appealed in their own way, as I might retrospectively imagined they might. They weren't designed -either intentionally, or somehow just for me- to lean to one from the other, but to illustrate the richness and variety, and infinite use, value, potential, reality of the theme. Like I said, it's a theme I'm warming to. I may even be beginning to hum it...
